Expedition Fishing

Swordfish

Until very recently Atlantic Swordfish were typically caught at night off South Florida. The new technique now most use is to deep drop baits “daytime fishing” in 1500-2000ft. with electric reels. In the 80’s the fishery was in decline from commercial fishing. Thanks to proper management this fish has rebounded very strong and many fish are now caught typically in the 100-250lb range but very often fish up to 600lbs. are brought aboard. South Florida is one on the best places to catch this fish but it takes a bit more running to reach the deeper waters and fairly calm days to effectively fish. Caught year round but certainly there are different times when they are more abundant and the Old. No. 7 crew is always on the cutting edge to fish for these tasty billfish. Even though electric reels are used it is still an exciting fight and most reels offer conventional reeling as well. Battles can last a long time and the fish can jump along the boat where they are often speared in the end to bring aboard.
