Mackerel
Mackerel (King, Cero, Spanish) are the hunters of the reef, are hard fighters and have spectacular bites on live and dead baits. Seeing a mackerel “sky” ten feet out of the water on a bait is always thrilling. These toothy critters are best caught fishing wire but often landed on monofilament as well. The meat is quite good fresh but does not freeze well. Often people smoke the fish and make delicious fish dips out of mackerel. These fish are caught year round and more often off Florida than the Bahamas.
